Whole-patient support is reshaping oncology care
Cancer treatment is becoming increasingly personalized, while many patients are managing complex therapy regimens outside the clinic, including at home. As a result, effective oncology care increasingly requires more than dispensing medication — it also involves clinical, financial and day-to-day patient support.
Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy uses its Specialty360 model to bring together oncology-trained pharmacists, nurses, dietitians and benefits specialists to support patients throughout treatment.
According to Walgreens’ internal data:
🔹 medication adherence reaches 92%;
🔹 in 2024, 56% of patients paid $0 out of pocket for both cancer therapy and treatment for other conditions;
🔹 100% of oncology patients are screened for treatment-related symptoms during every consultation;
🔹 47% of screened patients had not been prescribed an anti-nausea medication despite clinical recommendations.
Support also covers medication education, side-effect management, nutrition, mental health, transportation and housing assistance, as well as fertility and family-planning consultations.
As oncology care becomes more personalized and increasingly home-based, Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy says supporting the patient’s broader medical and personal needs can help patients remain on therapy and navigate treatment more effectively.
